India’s Krishna Srinivasan to head IMF’s Asia-Pacific dept

Kristalina Georgieva, the Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund, said on Wednesday that Krishna Srinivasan, an Indian, will take over as Director of the Asia and Pacific Department (APD) on June 22. According to the IMF, Srinivasan will succeed Changyong Rhee, who announced his resignation from the Fund on March 23.

Why Srinivasan has appointed as director?

Mr. Srinivasan has more than 27 years of Fund experience, starting in 1994 in the Economist Program. He is currently a Deputy Director in APD where he oversees the department’s surveillance work on a number of large and systemically important countries such as China and Korea, and smaller states in the Pacific such as Fiji and Vanuatu.

Career of Srinivasan:

Srinivasan worked as an Assistant Professor of Economics and International Finance at Indiana-Purdue University as a consultant at the World Bank in Washington, DC, and the Center for Policy Research and Planning Commission in New Delhi before joining the Fund.

Prior to joining the Fund, Mr. Srinivasan was an Assistant Professor of Economics and International Finance at Indiana-Purdue University and a consultant at the World Bank in DC and the Center for Policy Research and Planning Commission in New Delhi.

His wide research on Asia, Latin America, and the Caribbean, and on climate and other economic and development issues has appeared in books, academic journals, and media publications.

AR Rahman appointed ambassador of Indo-UK culture platform

Music great A R Rahman has been named the ambassador of the British Council’s ‘India-UK Together Season of Culture’, which aims to boost collaboration among emerging artists. It was officially launched, by Britain’s Deputy High Commissioner to India Jan Thomson and Director (India) of the British Council Barbara Wickham. The Season of Culture aims to strengthen India-UK collaboration in the areas of arts, English and education.

About season of Culture:

Over 1,400 artists will showcase their collaborations to millions of audiences across India, Britain, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, through a wide array of arts such as theatre, dance, visual arts, literature, music, architecture, design, fashion, tech-art and new media art. The ‘Season of Culture’ intends to build on the British Council’s work in India and strengthen partnerships between India and the UK in the arts, English, and education. People in both nations will get the opportunity to see unique and exciting creative work by UK and Indian artists.

QS World University Rankings 2023 released

QS World University Rankings 2023 released

Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), a London based global higher education analyst, has released the 19th edition of its prestigious World University Rankings 2022 list, the largest ever, with 1418 institutions across one hundred locations against the featured 1300 universities in the 18th edition of QS World University Rankings 2022. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the USA continues to be the best university for the eleventh time in a row. As expected, the USA and the European universities dominated the QS Rankings 2023.

The ranking was topped by the United States (US)’s Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) followed by the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom (UK) and Stanford University (US).

Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, Karnataka, ranked 155 gaining 31 places since 2022 ranking and emerged as the fastest rising South Asian University among the top 200 universities.

41 Indian varsities have been found place in the rankings. Among QS World University Rankings top 200 varsities, The Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru (155th) topped among Indian universities, followed by IIT Bombay (172nd) and IIT Delhi (174th).

RBI raises individual housing loan limit for co-operative banks

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has raised the limits for individual housing loans being extended by Urban Cooperative Banks (UCBs) and Rural Cooperative Banks by over 100%. The limits for Tier I /Tier II UCBs have been revised from ₹30 lakh/ ₹70 lakh to ₹60 lakh/ ₹140 lakh, respectively.

RCBs the limits have been increased:-

(i) From ₹20 lakh to ₹50 lakh for RCBs with assessed net worth less than ₹100 crore

(ii) From ₹30 lakh to ₹75 lakh for other RCBs.

European Parliament votes to ban sale of new petrol and diesel cars by 2035

European Parliament Members have voted to prohibit the sale of new petrol and diesel cars by 2035. The EU assembly voted in Strasbourg, France to require automakers to cut carbon-dioxide emissions by 100 percent by the middle of the next decade. The mandate would amount to a prohibition on the sale in the 27-nation bloc of new cars powered by gasoline or diesel.

Aim: To fight against climate change.

EU lawmakers also endorsed a 55% reduction in CO2 from automobiles in 2030 compared with 2021.

Manish Narwal and Rubina Francis won the 10m P6 air pistol mixed team event to clinch India’s third gold medal at the ongoing World Shooting Para Sport World Cup in Chateauroux, France on Wednesday.

Narwal and Francis, who aggregated a world record qualifying score of 565 to enter the final at the top position, defeated Chinese pair of Yang Chao and Min Li 17-11 in the title clash. The Indian pair totalled 274.3. The Indian duo has also created a new world record in the qualification stage with a score of 565 to enter the final at the top position. Earlier, Avani Lekhara has bagged the gold in women’s 10m air rifle standing SH1.

Mithali Raj announces her retirement from international cricket

Indian Women’s cricket legend, Mithali Raj has announced her retirement from all forms of international cricket at the age of 39 years.

She has represented India in matches (232) and scored 7,805 runs at an average of 50.68. She made her international debut in an ODI against Ireland, in June 1999. She became the first and is the only woman cricketer to have aggregated more than 10,000 international runs in over 350 matches across all three formats.

Union Health Minister releases FSSAI’s 4th State Food Safety Index

In an effort to galvanize States/UTs to work towards ensuring safe food for citizens, Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare Dr Mansukh Mandaviya released Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI)’s 4th State Food Safety Index (SFSI) to measure the performance of States across five parameters of food safety. SFSI was started from 2018-19 with the aim of creating a competitive and positive change in the food safety ecosystem in the country.  The index will help in providing safe and nutritious food to our citizens.

Tamil Nadu topped the list among large states followed by Gujarat and Maharashtra.

Smaller states: Goa(1st) followed by Manipur and Sikkim.

UTs: Jammu & Kashmir, Delhi and Chandigarh

OECD cuts India Growth forecast to 6.9% in FY23

The Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) has forecast India’s GDP growth at 6.9 per cent for FY23 from 8.1 per cent estimated earlier. OECD has also projected the growth for India is 6.2% in 2023. The Reserve Bank of India has also estimated the nations growth to 7.2%.

The RBI has also raised the repo rate by 50 basis points (bps) to 4.9% in a bid to curb the soaring inflation in the country.
