Amit Shah Inaugurates Turmeric Board HQ in Nizamabad
Amid a significant initiative to empower turmeric farmers and expand export opportunities for the turmeric industry, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, inaugurated the National Headquarters of the Turmeric Board at Nizamabad, Telangana on June 30, 2025. The initiative carries significant weight in terms of the government’s spur to improve turmeric production, branding, research, and foreign trade. The board is well positioned to be transformative for India’s spice economy with a substantial commitment of ₹200 crore and the goal of achieving $1 billion in turmeric export by 2030.
The opening of the National Turmeric Board’s headquarters in Nizamabad reflects a major milestone and one that local farmers have long been asking for. The establishment of the board fulfills a significant electoral promise made by BJP during the 2019 elections to farmers in the region and reflects the Centre’s renewed momentum to promote Indian spices into international markets.
Goals and Objectives
• To achieve $1 billion in turmeric exports by 2030
• To provide turmeric farmers with remunerative prices
• To advance branding, packaging, and marketing
• To support research and development to improve quality
Background and Context
• Nizamabad is a major centre for turmeric farming in Telangana.
• Farmers have long sought a Turmeric Board dedicated to resolving issues facing farmers.
• BJP MP D. Arvind pledged the board in 2019 and defeated K. Kavitha, daughter of ex-CM K. Chandrasekhar Rao, riding largely on that issue.
• Earlier, PM Modi announced the board; today it has been officially opened.
G7 Nations Agree to Exempt U.S. Firms from Global Minimum Tax
The Group of Seven (G7) countries, in a significant policy alteration, will exempt U.S. multinational companies from the global minimum tax in their agreement, providing a specific “side-by-side” taxation treatment for these companies. Earlier in the day, the G7 specified these companies will be taxed solely in the United States on the profits they accrue both domestically and abroad. U.S. Treasury Secretary has called this a game “changing” piece of a potentially new framework of global taxation that may completely transform the OECD negotiated framework that was established in 2021.
The G7 issued a communique on June 28, 2025, while Canada presided over the meeting which stated U.S. multinational companies will be exempt from the 15% global minimum tax. This comes after Trump turned to domestic policy changes and various diplomatic challenges to alter international taxation law. In line with the overall changes to the U.S. tax code, this is a significant separation from the agreement governing information that participants had entered into as part of the OECD’s landmark 2021 agreement to consider globalization in taxation.
Background and Context
• In 2021, under OECD auspices about 140 countries came to a two-pillar global tax deal.
• Pillar One: The agreement turns over taxation rights on large multinationals.
• Pillar Two: Introduces a 15% Global Minimum Tax to eliminate a competitive tax advantage or base erosion through tax competition models.
• The U.S. has expressed concern within this agreement since its announcement, this was especially evident while domestic policy was developed during Trump’s presidency who cited reason to repeal to sovereignty and domestic business competitive issues.
What the G7 Agreement Provides
• U.S. corporations will be taxed only in the United States — they will not be taxed in the various jurisdictions where they operate.
• This is called a “side-by-side” model.
The arrangement offers,
- Tax stability and reduced compliance complexity.
- Increased foreign investment appeal for U.S. businesses.
- Strategic shielding from double taxation.
The US Treasury Department has indicated that removing Section 899 from the entire bill negotiated in the Senate creates a common understanding that the side-by-side approach may help preserve the progress achieved by jurisdictions in the Inclusive Framework to address base erosion and profit shifting.
“Following the removal of section 899 from the Senate version of the One, Big, Beautiful Bill, and consideration of the success of Qualified Domestic Minimum Top-up Tax implementation and its impact – there is a shared understanding that a side-by-side system could preserve important gains made by jurisdictions inside the Inclusive Framework in tackling base erosion and profit shifting and provide greater stability and certainty in the international tax system moving forward, the G7 announced. We look forward to discussing and developing this understanding within the Inclusive Framework,” the Treasury said in a post on X.

MoSPI releases SDG publications on 19th Statistics Day 2025
India has taken impressive steps towards attaining the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as explained in the National Indicator Framework (NIF) Progress Report 2025. The NIF Report, released on Statistics Day, presents time series data on SDG indicators. The Report shows progress in health, education, and social protection sectors, and that over the period from 2015 – 16, there has been progress in these sectors. There is also progress in social protection. There are still challenges in clean energy and inequality.
Key Achievements in Health and Social Protection
The report shows a massive change in the population covered by social protection. The proportion of the population covered by social protection has increased from 22% in 2016 to 64.3% in 2025. The report identifies improvements in maternal and child health progress indicators. This demonstrates how health programmes are working. The report also shows that the number of citizens over the age of 60 receiving a type of institutional assistance increased to 157,000 citizens in 2023 – 24, up from 23,000 citizens in 2015.
Impressive Growth in Education
The gross enrolment ratio (GER) for tertiary education increased from 23.7% in 2015 – 16 to 29.5% in 2022 – 23. This has drawn attention to the trend that higher education access is increasing, improving educational access. The emphasis on education by government reforms is credited with the change in levels of education, and possible increased capacity for a workforce.
Impressive Growth in Economic Growth and Agricultural Productivity
The gross value added (GVA) in agriculture per worker increased from ₹61,247₹61,247 in 2015 – 16 to ₹94,110 in 2024 – 25. This indicates that the productivity of agriculture improved, and so did the income from agriculture. Rural economies and food security rely on sustained increases in agricultural productivity and incomes.
Impressive Improvement in the Environment
The report showed the increase of renewable energies share of total installed electricity generation increased from 16.02% in 2015 – 16 to 22.13% in 2024 – 25. Since climate change is a planned SDG initiative, and the figure represents a minor success in climate change adaptation. The report also showed that forest cover increased by 0.42% from 21.34% of the geographical area to 21.76% of the geographical area identified as forest cover.
Technological Integration in Data Collection
The launch of the GoIStats mobile application marks step in data accessibility. This app provides real-time access to crucial socio-economic indicators. The initiative aims to enhance data-driven policymaking, making statistics more available to the public.
The Role of Statistics in Development
Statistics Day commemorates the contributions of Professor Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis. The government emphasises the importance of statistical reforms. Technological advancements are transforming the statistical system for better data monitoring. This evolution supports the broader goal of Viksit Bharat.
