Maniram Dewan – Pioneer and Patriot

Maniram Dewan (1806–1858) stands out as a significant Assamese nobleman and tea planter, remembered as one of the early martyrs in India’s battle against British colonialism. Hailing from Assam, he began his journey with the British East India Company, first as a noble and then as a revenue officer. Yet, it wasn’t long before he became disenchanted with the British rule.

Maniram was one of the first Indians to establish a private tea garden, challenging the British monopoly in the tea industry. He’s recognized as the first Indian tea planter, and his contributions marked the beginnings of economic nationalism in Assam. However, his opposition to British policies and increasing influence resulted in conflicts with colonial authorities.

During the Revolt of 1857, Maniram took a stand against British rule, actively supporting the uprising. He reached out to fellow Indian rebels and worked to rally resistance efforts in Assam. Unfortunately, his activities were uncovered, leading to his arrest by the British. In 1858, he faced a tragic fate when he was publicly hanged in Jorhat, earning him the title of one of the first Assamese martyrs.

Maniram Dewan is remembered as a visionary, a pioneer in Assam’s tea industry, and a courageous freedom fighter who laid down his life for the cause of India’s independence.
