US President Biden Nominated Julie Turner as North Korea Human Rights Envoy

US President Biden Nominated Julie Turner as North Korea Human Rights Envoy

US President Biden Nominated Julie Turner as North Korea Human Rights Envoy: The White House nominated a special envoy for human rights in North Korea, moving to fill a post that has been empty since 2017 amid debate over how rights issues fit with efforts to counter Pyongyang’s nuclear weapons programme. President Joe Biden nominated Julie Turner, a long-time diplomat and current director of the Office of East Asia and the Pacific in the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor at the Department of State. The announcement comes as the United States and South Korea, whose new conservative leader, Yoon Suk Yeol, has also turned his focus to human rights issues, are taking a harder approach toward Pyongyang.

January 2023 Current Affairs Quiz

More About The Development:

The special envoy position, and a similar one in South Korea, had become controversial as preceding administrations tried to bring North Korea to the negotiating table. Human rights, according to some activists, have been neglected in favour of issues related to national security.

Human Rights Push By President Biden:

Biden vowed repeatedly after taking office in 2021 that human rights would be at the centre of his foreign policy, but the position had remained vacant.

South Korea’s ambassador on North Korean human rights expressed disappointment last year that Biden’s administration had yet to appoint an envoy for the issue at the time.

North Korea’s Position:

North Korea has repeatedly rejected accusations of human rights abuses and blames sanctions for a dire humanitarian situation. It accuses Washington and Seoul of using the issue as a political tool to smear Pyongyang’s reputation.

A landmark 2014 U.N. report on North Korean human rights concluded that North Korean security chiefs – and possibly leader Kim Jong Un himself – should face justice for overseeing a state-controlled system of Nazi-style atrocities. Since then, North Korea’s coronavirus controls, according to UN investigators, have exacerbated human rights breaches. They cite more information access limitations, stricter border security, and heightened digital surveillance.

International Holocaust Remembrance Day observed on 27th January

International Holocaust Remembrance Day observed on 27th January

International Holocaust Remembrance Day 2023: International Holocaust Remembrance Day is observed annually on January 27 to remember the crimes committed by Adolf Hitler, who is thought to have killed six million Jews. The day commemorates the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau in January 1945 from Nazi control.

January 2023 Current Affairs Quiz

2023 theme for Holocaust remembrance and education:

In 2023, United Nations Holocaust memory and education are guided by the theme “Home and Belonging.” The theme highlights the humanity of the Holocaust victims and survivors, who had their home and sense of belonging ripped from them by the perpetrators of the Holocaust.

Holocaust Remembrance Day: Significance

The commemoration of Holocaust Memorial Day is important as it makes the world remember the killing of six million Jews, two-thirds of Europe’s Jewish population, and millions of others by the Nazi forces and their collaborators. The day is commemorated to encourage the development of educational programmes about Holocaust history to help prevent future acts of genocide. The day also encourages member nations of the UN to preserve sites that were used by the Nazis during the “Final Solution,” which include killing centers, concentration camps, and prisons.

Holocaust Memorial Day: History

During 1933–1945, Hitler’s German Nazi administration killed many ethnic groups, notably European Jews, whom he regarded as an inferior race. It is said that Jewish men, women, and children at the Auschwitz concentration camp in Poland faced the most heinous atrocities. The UN General Assembly adopted Resolution 60/7 not only to commemorate the “International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust,” but to reject any form of Holocaust denial.

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights supports the resolution to condemn all forms of “religious intolerance, incitement, harassment, or violence against persons or communities based on ethnic origin or religious belief” across the world.

The Holocaust Remembrance Days have been established in many of the participating nations. The Warsaw ghetto revolt took place on April 19, which Argentina designated as National Day for Cultural Diversity. As of April 16, Hungary will observe National Holocaust Remembrance Day.  Whereas the US Days of Remembrance correspond to Yom Ha-Shoah, Israel’s annual Holocaust Remembrance Day.

NASA to test nuclear-powered spacecraft by 2027

NASA to test nuclear-powered spacecraft by 2027

NASA to test nuclear-powered spacecraft by 2027: NASA and DARPA (US military’s research and development agency) will join hands to develop nuclear-powered rockets that could fly astronauts to Mars.

January 2023 Current Affairs Quiz

This mission could allow spacecraft to travel faster, reduce transit time, and have other benefits. US Space agency could develop and demonstrate advanced nuclear thermal propulsion technology as soon as 2027. NASA also believes that they could be ready to send humans to Mars by the late 2030s. With the help of this new technology, astronauts could journey to and from deep space faster than ever – a major capability to prepare for crewed missions to Mars,” said NASA Administrator Bill Nelson. “Congratulations to both NASA and DARPA on this exciting investment, as we ignite the future, together.”

Using a nuclear thermal rocket allows for faster transit time, reducing risk for astronauts. Reducing transit time is a key component for human missions to Mars, as longer trips require more supplies and more robust systems. Maturing faster, more efficient transportation technology will help NASA meet its Moon to Mars Objectives. Other benefits to space travel include increased science payload capacity and higher power for instrumentation and communication. In a nuclear thermal rocket engine, a fission reactor is used to generate extremely high temperatures. The engine transfers the heat produced by the reactor to a liquid propellant, which is expanded and exhausted through a nozzle to propel the spacecraft. Nuclear thermal rockets can be three or more times more efficient than conventional chemical propulsion. “NASA has a long history of collaborating with DARPA on projects that enable our respective missions, such as in-space servicing,” said NASA Deputy Administrator Pam Melroy. “Expanding our partnership to nuclear propulsion will help drive forward NASA’s goal to send humans to Mars.”

NASA Administrator: Bill Nelson
