International Cheetah Day 2022: On December 4th, the National Zoological Park, Delhi Zoo, observed International Cheetah Day and Wildlife Conservation Day in New Delhi. The celebration’s goal is to raise awareness about wildlife conservation among today’s generation. The day is dedicated to encouraging people worldwide to help this animal win the race against extinction. Cheetahs are carnivores and they usually chase down their prey and then bite its throat, killing it by cutting off its air supply (suffocation).
Notably: The National Zoological Park, New Delhi (Delhi Zoo) in partnership with the Central Zoo Authority celebrated International Cheetah Day in India.
International Cheetah Day 2022: History
A special day dedicated to these incredible racing species holds roots to the Cheetah Conservation Fund (CCF), and an American zoologist and researcher named Dr. Laurie Marker. Dr. Laurie Marker, an American zoologist, is credited with creating International Cheetah Day. Dr. Marker founded the Cheetah Conservation Fund in 1991, and in 2010, she established December 4 as International Cheetah Day. Since that year, the world has been celebrating this day.
According to reports, the day began when Dr. Marker established December 4th as International Cheetah Day in honour of Khayam, a cheetah she reared at the Wildlife Safari she owned in Oregon. Khayam was trained for the first research project in re-wilding and inspired her first trip to Namibia in 1977. Interestingly, International Cheetah Day coincides with the day for wildlife conservation. These global days are an opportunity for people to get closer to mother nature and protect other living beings from being harmed or endangered.
Timeline of crucial events:
- In the 1980s, she created a programme to educate locals to preserve cheetahs instead of killing them. The Cheetah Conservation Fund, which aims to rescue the cheetah, was established in 1991.
- Then, on December 4, 2010, Khayam’s birthday was officially recognised as International Cheetah Day for the first time. Eight cheetahs were brought to the Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh in 2022 from Namibia, an African nation.
About the Cheetah’s: The cheetah (a big and slender cat with long legs) is popularly known as the fastest animal on earth, it can reach a top speed of 70 mph in just three seconds. Cheetahs hunt during the day, unlike most other big cats, and can weigh between 46 and 158 pounds. At present the majority of the animal is found in Namibia and South Africa. It was declared as an extinct animal in 1954 by the government. The Indian government has begun an initiative to introduce cheetahs to India from Namibia, where they would be housed in Madhya Pradesh’s Kuno National Park.

List of countries at risk of mass killings: India is ranked eighth among the nations with the highest risk of mass murder in 2022 and 2023, according to a new analysis by the US think tank Early Warning Project. India has seen a drop in rank from second position in the earlier year. “India’s shift in rank from second to eighth can be most attributed to an improvement in the freedom of movement for men [which is one of the variables used for the analysis],” the report said.
Key points in the report:
- Pakistan is estimated to have about a one in six chance of experiencing a new mass killing in 2022 or 2023, it said.
- Among the 162 countries, Yemen came in second, Myanmar third, Ethiopia fifth, Nigeria sixth, and Afghanistan seventh on the list this year, according to the 2022–23 report.
- India has performed worse than Sudan (ninth), Somalia (10th), Syria (11th), Iraq (12th), and Zimbabwe (14th rank).
- According to the report for 2021-2022, India was ranked in the second position among the top 15 highest-risk countries for the last five years.
About the Project: The Dickey Center for International Understanding at Dartmouth College and the Simon-Skjodt Center for the Prevention of Genocide at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum collaborated on the Project. A mass killing, as per the report, is 1,000 or more civilians deliberately killed by armed forces (whether government or non-state), over a period of a year or less, because of their membership in a particular group. If they match this definition, virtually all cases of genocide include mass murder, the research stated. The other variables, or ‘risk factors’, used for the analysis include the countries’ basic characteristics (for example, geographic region, population); socioeconomic measures (changes in gross domestic product per capita); measures of governance (restrictions on political candidates and parties); levels of human rights (freedom of movement); and records of violent conflict (battle-related deaths, ongoing mass killings).

Nagpur Metro successfully created a Guinness World Record: By building the largest double-decker viaduct (metro), which is 3,140 metres long, Nagpur Metro has successfully established a Guinness World Record. There are three metro stations on the 3.14 km double-decker viaduct on Wardha Road: Chhatrapati Nagar, Jai Prakash Nagar, and Ujjwal Nagar. These stations require special planning which are station specific to meet the functional requirements of themetro duly incorporating site specific constraints and double-decker viaduct requirements. These stations represent a significant engineering challenge in terms of thought process, concept, design, and execution.
About the project:
- The project has already bagged records from Asia Book and India Book. Initially, the alignment of the highway flyover and metro rail were on same existing highway on Wardha Road, with independent piers at alternating locations proposed on the median. After further consideration, it was decided to combine the Highway Flyover with the Metro Rail to form a double-decker viaduct.
- Double decker viaduct carries highway flyover at the first level and Metro Rail at second level making it a three-tier transportation system with the existing highway at ground level. This assisted in avoiding additional land acquisition, saving money on land costs and cutting down on project costs and construction time.
